Hanwha Resort Seorak Sorano Review: A Family Stay in Sokcho

If you’re planning a family trip to Sokcho, two names will come up again and again: Hanwha Resort Seorak Sorano, and the Waterpia water park sitting right next to it. We stayed two nights over Christmas (December 25–26, 2024) in a Deluxe European Room — ₩414,000 total for two nights. Here’s an honest account of the stay, the facilities, and what to eat and do nearby.

🗺️ First: What Is Sokcho?

Sokcho (속초) is a coastal city in Gangwon Province on Korea’s northeast coast — about 2.5 to 3 hours from Seoul by express bus or car. It sits where the mountains meet the sea: Seoraksan National Park, one of Korea’s most dramatic mountain ranges, is 40 minutes away, while Sokcho Beach stretches along the eastern seafront with views out over the East Sea.

For Korean domestic travelers, Sokcho is one of the most beloved weekend getaway destinations in the country — consistently ranked among the top three domestic travel destinations. The city is famous for fresh East Sea seafood (especially snow crab, squid, and sundubu soft tofu stew), the scenic lagoons of Yeongrangho and Cheongcho Lake, and Abai Village — a historic community founded by North Korean refugees after the Korean War. Sokcho is also the gateway to Seoraksan National Park, which draws millions of hikers each year, especially in autumn when the foliage turns.

For international visitors, Sokcho is an excellent choice if you want to see a side of Korea beyond Seoul — real seafood markets, mountain scenery, coastal walks, and a genuinely local atmosphere.

  • 🚌 Getting there: Direct express buses from Dong Seoul Bus Terminal (~2.5 hrs) or Seoul Express Bus Terminal (~3 hrs)
  • 🚗 By car: ~2.5 hrs from Seoul via the Donghae Expressway
  • 📅 Best time: Summer (beach + Waterpia), October (Seoraksan fall foliage), winter (quiet, great seafood, no crowds)
  • 📍 Region: Gangwon-do (Gangwon Province), northeast Korea

📍 Where Is the Resort?

Hanwha Resort Seorak Sorano sits on the western edge of Sokcho, between the city center and the entrance to Seoraksan. It’s not walkable to the main beach or market — you’ll need a car or taxi to get around. As a resort base it works well: Waterpia is literally next door, Sokcho Beach is 10 minutes by car, and Abai Village is 12 minutes away.

  • 🚗 Sokcho Beach (속초해수욕장) — ~10 min drive
  • 🚗 Abai Village (아바이마을) — ~12 min drive
  • 🚗 Yeongrangho Lake (영랑호) — ~8 min drive
  • 🚗 Sokcho Fish Market (중앙시장) — ~15 min drive
  • ⛰️ Seoraksan National Park — ~40 min drive

🏨 Lobby & Check-In

The resort is a large complex — check-in happens at the main lobby building, but the renovated European-style rooms are in a separate wing, so expect a short walk after you check in. The lobby itself is the resort’s most impressive space: high arched ceilings, terracotta tile floors, wrought-iron chandeliers, warm stone tones. During our Christmas stay there was a large decorated tree in the center. Korean families were taking photos in front of it all evening.

🛏️ Room — Deluxe European Room (Renovated)

At the time of writing, only the European-style rooms have been renovated. If you want the fresh interior, book a Deluxe European Room specifically — the older room types are still in their original condition.

The Deluxe European Room is genuinely large. Ours had a king bed, a sofa along the window wall, a round coffee table, full-length sheer curtains, and warm oak wood paneling throughout. The layout separates the living area, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom — proper rooms, not a studio layout. For families with young children, having that physical separation makes a meaningful difference at bedtime.

Check-in comes with an in-room tablet (Hanwha Resorts branded) that lets you request housekeeping items — extra towels, water, toothbrushes — without calling the front desk. Genuinely useful when managing a young child.

Kitchenette

No induction cooktop, so full cooking isn’t possible — but the kitchen layout is well designed for families bringing takeout or market food back to the room. Proper-sized fridge, microwave, sink, and Nespresso machine. Being able to store or heat baby food in the room is worth more than it sounds.

Bathroom

Dark slate-tone tiles, an oval LED mirror with warm backlighting, vessel sink on a floating oak vanity. Glass-enclosed shower with good water pressure. Toiletries are Balmain Paris Hair Couture in full-size bottles — not the single-use miniatures. Toothbrushes and razors are provided.

🎡 Resort Facilities

💧 Seorak Waterpia

The headline draw — a large indoor and outdoor water park adjacent to the resort, managed separately with its own admission fee. It’s the main reason most Korean families book Sorano. The combination of a comfortable room + a day at Waterpia is the standard itinerary, and it works well. In summer, book Waterpia tickets in advance — it sells out on weekends. In winter, the indoor hot spring pools remain open year-round.

🎮 Arcade

A real arcade — billiards tables in a glass-enclosed room, plus Transformers shooters, Speed Hockey, basketball machines, children’s ride games, and claw machines. Coin or card system. Gets busy in evenings. Good for families with kids above toddler age, and honestly fun for adults too.

👶 Kids Club & Indoor Pool

The resort has a dedicated toddler playroom (Kids Club), an indoor swimming pool, and a kids’ café. Availability varies by season — during our December 2024 visit, the Kids Club was temporarily suspended. Call ahead to confirm if it’s running before you book.

🛒 GS25 Convenience Store & Starbucks

Both are on the resort premises. The GS25 covers snacks, drinks, and forgotten essentials. Starbucks is the easiest morning coffee if you’re not driving out. Note: both are in the main building, a short walk from the renovated wing.

🍽️ Where to Eat Nearby

🥣 송정희 어머니 순두부 — The Famous Sundubu

The most well-known sundubu jjigae (soft tofu stew) restaurant in Sokcho, made with 100% Korean-grown soybeans. The stew comes bubbling in a black stone pot with rice porridge, miso soup, and banchan side dishes. Deeply warming and properly made. Arrive before opening on weekends to avoid a wait — this place draws a queue. A celebrity dining spot you’ll notice from the photo boards inside.

☕ ARUNA Café

A minimal white café with a rooftop terrace — clean architectural lines, floor-to-ceiling glass, and an outdoor seating area. The caramel pudding (flan served on a vintage silver plate with an iced Americano) is the order to get. Beautiful, good value, and worth the stop between the market and the beach.

🐟 Sokcho Fish Market (속초 중앙시장)

One of the largest fish markets in Gangwon Province. Get fresh snow crab, dried squid (오징어 for taking home), dak-gangjeong (crispy fried chicken), and Sokcho’s famous fish cake skewers (어묵). Budget ₩30,000–50,000 per person for a proper market meal and snacks. Loud, lively, local — exactly as it should be.

🦪 섭죽마을 (Seopjuk Village) — Don’t Skip This

A cluster of old-school restaurants near Abai Village, known for traditional abalone porridge (전복죽) and local seafood. Less touristy than the main market strip, and more local-feeling. This is a Sokcho meal that doesn’t feel staged for tourists. Worth going out of your way for.

🛒 하나로마트 (Hanaromart)

A large local supermarket — the place to stock the room’s fridge and pick up food gifts to bring home. Look for packaged sundubu in cartons, and 지장수 생막걸리 (Jijangsu fresh makgeolli), the local rice wine, in the refrigerated section. Fresh makgeolli has a short shelf life — drink within a few days of purchase.

🏖️ Things to Do in Sokcho

Sokcho Beach in winter with the white 人 sculpture on the sand and lighthouse in background

Sokcho Beach (속초해수욕장) is the main sandy beach, famous for the iconic white 人 (person) sculpture on the sand. Popular in summer, quieter and photogenic in winter. The area around the beach has good cafés and restaurants — SHLTR café, with its dark concrete interior and floor-to-ceiling ocean view windows, is Sokcho’s most atmospheric coffee stop.

Abai Village (아바이마을) is a historic community built by North Korean refugees after the Korean War. Today it’s a quiet neighborhood with excellent grilled squid restaurants and a hand-pulled cable ferry crossing the lagoon — the ferry ride itself is a Sokcho landmark experience.

Yeongrangho Lake (영랑호) is a scenic coastal lagoon a short drive from the resort. A free morning walk around the lake, with Seoraksan reflecting in the water on calm days, is one of Sokcho’s best low-key pleasures.

Seoraksan National Park (설악산) is about 40 minutes away by car. Korea’s most dramatic mountain scenery — granite peaks, cable cars, hiking trails from easy to serious. October is peak season for foliage; avoid weekends in autumn unless you book well in advance.
