Seoul with Kids: Free Half-Day from City Hall Gallery to Gwanghwamun Fountain

Seoul with Kids: Free Half-Day from City Hall Gallery to Gwanghwamun Fountain

I genuinely didn’t know this route existed until we stumbled upon it. Hidden beneath Seoul City Hall is a free cultural complex — think kids’ lounge, city exhibitions, and a Joseon-era archaeological dig preserved under glass — all stroller-friendly, all free, all connecting seamlessly to one of Seoul’s most iconic summer spots: the Hangeul fountain at Gwanghwamun Square.

We did this with our 4-year-old on a summer afternoon, kicking off at 1pm and finishing with dinner in Myeongdong around 7pm. Total distance on foot: under 2km.

🏺 Gungi-si Ruins (Underground Joseon-Era Site)

Just beyond the gallery, preserved beneath the city hall floor, are the excavated remains of the Joseon-dynasty Gungi-si — the royal weapons manufacturing facility. Display cases hold unearthed artifacts alongside explanations of daily life at the site. It connects directly with the gallery, so you can walk through without retracing your steps.

🥧 Liège Waffle Street Food

A 5-minute walk from City Hall, this street stall serves authentic Belgian-style Liège waffles — dense, chewy, caramelized. Grab one warm and eat it as you walk the Deoksugung Stone Wall. That combination is genuinely one of the highlights of the route.

🌿 Deoksugung Stone Wall Walk

One of Seoul’s most loved walking paths — a tree-lined stone wall following Deoksugung Palace. In summer, the canopy creates enough shade to make a midday stroll genuinely pleasant. Stroller-friendly the whole way, and the right distance for young kids to enjoy without a meltdown.

💡 Tip: The Royal Guard-Changing Ceremony at Deoksugung Gate runs at 11am, 2pm, and 3:30pm daily (closed Mondays). Depending on your timing, you may catch it mid-route.

☕ Jeon Kwang Soo Coffee House

At the far end of the stone wall, this quiet cafe is the perfect rest stop. Jeon Kwang Soo Coffee is a well-regarded Korean specialty coffee brand known for Ethiopian single-origin beans. The atmosphere is calm, the coffee is excellent, and it’s a natural pause before the walk to Gwanghwamun.

📚 Kyobo Books Gwanghwamun

A 10-minute walk from the coffee house brings you to Kyobo Books Gwanghwamun — one of Korea’s largest bookstores. Even if you don’t read Korean, it’s worth a browse: stationery, design goods, children’s picture books, and an overall atmosphere that’s unique to Seoul. The kids’ section is spacious.

💦 Gwanghwamun Hangeul Fountain (Yi Sun-sin Plaza)

In front of the Admiral Yi Sun-sin statue at Gwanghwamun Square, a ground-level fountain shaped from Hangeul consonants shoots up in summer. It runs free, there’s plenty of space, and kids just run straight in. Bring a change of clothes — this one is non-negotiable.

• Season: Summer only (May–September) / Free
• Location: Gwanghwamun Square, between the Sejong and Yi Sun-sin statues

🍜 Dinner — Myeongdong Kalguksu

Ten minutes on foot from the fountain brings you into Myeongdong. We ended the day at Myeongdong Kalguksu: handmade knife-cut noodles in a clear anchovy broth, plus dumplings. Simple, satisfying, and easy on the wallet. There’s usually a short queue, but the turnover is fast.
