Gangneung with Kids: The Only Food & Beach Guide You Need (1 Night / 2 Days)
August 2025 · Family road trip with a toddler
If you want to experience a real Korean summer, Gangneung is the answer. It’s about 2.5 hours from Seoul by car, the tofu is famous nationwide, and the beach is genuinely beautiful. We packed a full 1-night, 2-day itinerary â no tourist traps, only the spots that locals actually go to. Here’s everything we did with our toddler.
DAY 1 â Tofu Breakfast, Coffee, Beach & Skate Ray Stew for Dinner
𥣠1. Donghwa Garden â The Original Spicy Tofu Soup
Donghwa Garden exterior / Inside the restaurant
The first stop on any Gangneung trip should be Donghwa Garden â the restaurant credited with inventing champon-sundabu (spicy seafood soft tofu soup). The Chodang tofu village is famous across Korea, and this is the OG spot. Lines form before opening, so arrive by 9 AM. We got there a little before 9 and still waited 30 minutes.
Soft tofu soup / The original champon sundabu
The champon-sundabu is rich, spicy, and packed with silky smooth tofu. For kids, order the plain sundabu-baekban (tofu set meal) â it comes with rice and plenty of side dishes from the self-serve banchan bar. The spicy version might be a bit much for little ones.
Whole family at breakfast
Hours: 07:30â19:30 / Closed Wednesdays
Must-order: Champon sundabu, sundabu baekban
â 2. Chodang Coffee Jeongmiso â Corn Latte & Corn Shaved Ice
Corn drinks / Cake display
A two-minute walk from Donghwa Garden, Chodang Coffee Jeongmiso is set inside a converted old rice mill â the industrial space makes for great photos. The specialty here is corn-based drinks, a nod to Chodang’s famous corn harvest. The corn latte has a naturally sweet, nutty depth that pairs surprisingly well with espresso. In summer, the corn bingsu (shaved ice) is the crowd favorite.
Hours: 10:00â20:00 / Closed Tuesdays
Try: Corn latte, corn bingsu
ðï¸ 3. Gyeongpo Beach â The Best Beach in Gangneung
Gyeongpo Beach is Gangneung’s most famous stretch of sand â and it deserves the reputation. The sand is unusually fine and soft, perfect for kids. There’s a convenience store right on the beach, so grab cup noodles and eat them with a sea view (the most underrated summer move). During peak season, umbrella rentals and shower facilities are available.
ð¨ 4. Skybay Hotel Gyeongpo â Beachfront in Every Sense
Hotel exterior / Balcony lake view / Sunset
Gyeongpo at night from the balcony
Skybay Hotel Gyeongpo sits literally steps from the beach â you drop your bags and walk straight out to the sand. Rooms are compact, but the location is unbeatable. The balcony faces Gyeongpo Lake, and the sunset view in the evening is genuinely gorgeous. We had the beach on one side and a peaceful lake on the other â can’t ask for more.

ð½ï¸ 5. Jjimdaegam â Gangneung’s Best Skate Ray Stew
Jjimdaegam â “Skate Stew” is right on the sign
Corn & potato pancake / Skate ray stew
For dinner, head to Jjimdaegam. The signature dish is gaori-jjim â braised skate ray (not monkfish!). It’s steamed fresh and served with a deep, savory-spicy sauce that soaks into every bite. For a family of four, the small (â©50,000) or medium (â©60,000) is plenty. Don’t skip the corn & potato pancake (â©18,000) â crispy on the outside with a hint of sweet corn.
For kids, order the bulgogi rice bowl (â©12,000) or tofu udon (â©6,000) separately. High chairs are available and lots of families eat here, so it’s very child-friendly.
Hours: MonâFri 11:00â21:50 / Weekends 10:30â21:50
Gaori-jjim: S â©50,000 / M â©60,000 / L â©70,000

DAY 2 â Tofu Breakfast, Market Hotteok & Souvenir Shopping
𥬠6. Chahyeonhui Sundubu â Ridiculously Good Side Dishes
Restaurant exterior / Side dishes / Fermented soybean soup
Day 2 breakfast: Chahyeonhui Sundubu Cheongkukjang, the Chodang tofu restaurant famous for its insane banchan spread. Other tofu restaurants give you a few small plates â this one covers the entire table. The tofu is super fresh (made in-house), and the cheongkukjang (strong fermented soybean paste soup) is earthy and warming. Expect a wait, but it moves quickly.
Hours: 07:30â20:00 / Closed Thursdays
ð¥ 7. Gangneung Jungang Market â Hotteok + Ice Cream Combo
Moja hotteok / Making the hotteok / The finished combo
Eating hotteok (Korean sweet pancake) topped with soft-serve ice cream at Gangneung Jungang Market is the most tourist-y thing you can do in Gangneung â and also one of the best. The warm pancake melts the ice cream just enough. Gangneung also has its own version called moja hotteok (shaped like a hat), which is unique to this market. Kids absolutely lose it over this.
ð 8. Gangneung Hanaro Mart â Local Souvenirs
Last stop before heading back to Seoul. Hanaro Mart is a Korean agricultural cooperative supermarket, and the Gangneung branch has an excellent local products section. Pick up Gangneung makgeolli (rice wine), Chodang tofu, and Gangwon-do specialty snacks â great edible souvenirs that you can’t easily find in Seoul.
