Best Weekend Getaways from Seoul with Kids: Gangneung, Sokcho, Jeju & Daegu

Some trips from Seoul are too far for a single day, at least with a young child. We have taken our daughter, who is almost four, on a few longer escapes by car, train and plane, and these are the ones we would happily do again.

All four work best with at least one night. Each section below has what we did and the main thing to know, with a link to the full guide.

At a Glance

  • Gangneung: about 2.5 hours by car. Beach and tofu soup. Best as 1 night.
  • Sokcho: just north of Gangneung. A relaxed half-day of brunch and beach.
  • East Jeju: a short flight, then a rental car. We did 2 nights at a resort hotel.
  • Daegu: a long-distance train trip south. A calm indoor art museum for a rainy afternoon.

Four Trips Worth a Night or Two

1. Gangneung: Tofu Soup and a Beach Day

Gangneung is about 2.5 hours from Seoul by car and is best explored with a car, so we spent one night. We started with the famous spicy tofu soup at Donghwa Garden, then headed to the beach. Arrive early at the restaurant, because lines form before opening.

2. Sokcho: A Slow Half-Day by the Sea

Sokcho sits just north of Gangneung, so many families combine the two. We kept it slow with a toddler: brunch at a small café, a few shops, and then the beach, where our daughter spent most of the time in the water with her dad.

3. East Jeju: A Resort Base With a Toddler-Friendly Beach

Jeju is a short flight from Seoul, and the island is easiest with a rental car. We based ourselves at Haevichi Hotel on the east coast for 2 nights and kept every day slow. The hotel has a free kids zone for children under 7, a connected pool, and a nearby beach where the water stays knee-deep for a long stretch.

Outside the hotel, we visited a countryside café, went to the beach, and rode two-seat go-karts that let a parent ride alongside a young child. Plan on a rental car, because getting around on the east side without one is hard.

The full itinerary is in our 2 nights, 3 days East Jeju guide, and our Haevichi Hotel review covers the hotel in detail.

4. Daegu: A Calm Art Museum for a Rainy Afternoon

Daegu is a long-distance trip south of Seoul, so we treated it as part of a longer stay rather than a day trip. If you do go, Daegu Art Museum is one of the easiest indoor stops we have found with a young child. There is a cozy rest area, a free hands-on drawing activity, and the galleries felt welcoming rather than strict.

Exhibitions change, so check what is on before you go. Our full notes are in our Daegu Art Museum guide.

Which One Should You Pick?

  • You want the sea in summer: Gangneung and Sokcho together as a 1-night trip.
  • You want a real vacation with a toddler: East Jeju, based at one resort.
  • It is raining and you are already in the south: Daegu Art Museum.

Tips for Longer Trips With Young Kids

  • Choose one base. Moving hotels every night is the fastest way to tire a young child.
  • Rent a car with a child seat. Gangneung and East Jeju are both much easier by car, and a child seat can be booked ahead.
  • Plan one main thing per day. Leave the rest of the day for naps, the beach and the pool.
  • Book restaurants and hotels early on holidays. Popular spots fill up fast on long weekends.

Short on time? Our best day trips from Seoul with kids are easy enough to do in a single day.

Final Thoughts

If we had to pick one for a first long trip with a young child, it would be East Jeju at a resort for a true vacation, or Gangneung for a simpler weekend by car. Keep the plan short and let the child lead. That is when these trips worked best for us.
